I used to deliver money down there... 3rd st, Gettysburg, Salem, Hoover, Philadelphia, etc.

I didn't even mind the people, I think it was their total acceptance of breaking laws and not providing a good role model for their kids. Hell, my wife worked at a teen/adolescent drug and alcohol recovery center down there but she quickly became discouraged when she saw the same people coming back over and over. Hard drugs have ruined half of Dayton.

I left in April of last year, but I still rock Ohio tags on my car

Yeah.

There are pockets that didn't get hit that bad by the recession. But the areas that did, wow.

We've volunteered with Habitat, and I'm sometimes scared to drive through these areas to get to the work site. As a dorky white guy who grew up around corn fields in a rural area, I just haven't been exposed to much in the way of racial differences.

I like to think most people are generally nice to others.

And down there, even in the bad areas, they are still nice. The 10% who wish they were thugs and gangsters ruin it for the 90% who work where they can and try hard. I got to meet a lot of nice people who work the stores down there. They aren't effective enough at policing their own community to make a change though.

Oh, gotcha. My wife got orders to South Dakota, just outside Rapid City. It's actually a really nice area. Her family is all in the Dayton/Springfield area still. We both went to Wright State.

That's exactly what my wife's grandfather and uncle (both Ohio state alums) would say. Dakotas are nice. Winters are extremely tough but we are managing ok. Scenery is outstanding - Mt Rushmore, Custer Park, Badlands, the Black Hills, etc.

Between Sioux Falls and Rapid City is a metric ton of nothing though. Noooooothing

As a Daytonian you know I could drive down east third and have that sold before I hit Drexel. That's how I sold my 86 olds. Drove down to my old neighborhood from Kettering sold it to some kid down by Washington Park for 3000!
